IF you wish to close your eyes to the reality of how washington works, that's your business. You need look no further than Tom DeLay. The president doesn't need to be directly involved. The policy influence comes from below. You should note in this regard that the primary task of every congressperson is to get re-elected. They need to raise at least $10K per month to have any hope of doing so. DC is awash in influence peddling.

I am not avoiding the safety issue. I'm saying the FDA has no will to address it for the simple reason that it hurts the drug companies. I may have overstated the case by saying no one has died, but at this point I daresay the FDA has yet to show that anyone has even been injured. No warnings have been issued, no bogus drugs have been interdicted, no arrests, no indictments. It's like going to yellow alert status with no proof of danger. Are supposed to take the FDA's word on everything? If so, why didn't they pull Vioxx off the market 4 years ago when the evidence showed risk? Why did it take so long for them to say stop giving mood altering drugs to teenagers because it makes them suicidal? How many teenagers had to die-in the face of warnings- before they did that? The FDA has already shown its colors. What makes you think this situation is any different?

By refusing to allow Medicare to negotiate group discounts, the president is showing himself to be entirely and consistently interested only in preserving the profit of the drug companies at the expense of all taxpayers.
