You sound positively southern with talk of politeness. :) But it is a good thing! Or as my Grandmother said, "never discuss religion or politics at dinner". We do that dance most the time in 3d and it makes life much more enjoyable. For people I get close to? Yes, there is more probing, more clarity on common values. But I don't find it surprising that still we can differ a lot. I find values of curtesy, decency, charity, acceptance, being there for each other, and the like... to be the values I cherish. With gentle talk, issues more thorny can usually be brought to a place of mutual accord that suits both parties and extends the friendship. When that can't happen, then they are polite acquaintanships. And if they can't be polite? Well, that's another territory. :)
