RE- the Jack Miles LA TImes OP ed piece

I like to see things through a glass that is half full rather than half empty. Miles seems like a doom and gloom handwringer.

My take is that the death of Arafat provides a great opportunity that could bring about a chance to break through the deadlock and never ending cycle of violence. US and George Bush should soon work full out to broker peace and be somewhat heavy handed if necessary.

It will not be easy as there are many obstructionists to peace on both the Palestinian and Israeli sides. I believe that the Palestinians are starting to understand that their Intifada has brought them nothing but misery. The alternative of a statehood that they are seeking, even if they dont get all what they want could be looking good now. I doubt anyone would want the kind of life they live now or want it to continue for their children.

The rewards are great and it is worth trying. Most of the anti US feelings in the ME stem from our support of Israel. Solving this along with Iraq (this is coming) will go a long way towards stabilizing the region. This could be a tremendous legacy for Bush.

Regards

Neil
