China, US head for trade battle

Andrew Yeh / Hong Kong November 06, 2004

Beijing resolutely opposes the Bush administration's import restrictions on Chinese textile products.

Trade tensions between the US and China have become increasingly heated as the Bush administration considers more stringent import restrictions on a variety of Chinese textile products.

“The Chinese government resolutely opposes the US handling of this matter,” ministry spokesperson Chong Quan said in a statement issued on the ministry’s website.

“This entirely goes against the free market principles of the (World Trade Organisation) and the spirit of the free trade of textile products.”

China’s commerce ministry said the US had “seriously damaged” the confidence Chinese manufacturers have had since joining the WTO and that it would consider further action.
