That's the underlying problem with American government.

Nations like Switzerland which operate as a democracy do not have these sort of problems where lobbyists can get legislation passed which is detrimental to the nation.

Unfortunately, America was created as a Republic where the governing officials are protected from the public which elected them. It is fairly easy to corrupt a thousand representatives into violating the public trust. It's far more difficult to convince 300 million people to vote for laws against their best interests.

You'd never be able to get the Swiss to vote in "tax cuts" paid for with national debt. I doubt you'd be able to get even Americans to vote for that in a referendum. But it was fairly easy to corrupt their 1,000 leaders into signing on for that self-delusion.
