That is a legitimate way of ensuring equal protection under the law and I support it.

What concerns me is Bush's position on the issue, which appears different from the republican platform. Did he support civil unions during the campaign just to reach out to moderates, or will he revert back to the republican platform, which opposes civil unions? Carl Rove, in discussions the past few days mentioned Bush's commitment to a constitutional amendment defining marriage but said nothing of "civil unions".

We shall see.
