Suma,

I went to a fund raiser last night, it was a largely gay crowd. I thought I was bummed about the election, those folks are under attack for just wanting to be them selves. Their issues and interests were used and abused, and they fear being attacked. It makes me sick.

Rove was on the news shows this weekend saying the President would surely be backing a Constitutional Amendment to block gay marriage...he said it was present to the evangelical crowd, for their support. Just think about that, being willing to give away one groups rights to another, as a prize, and then writing that prejudice into the Constitution.

They diminish us all.

USA health improvements are stalling, especially obesity and infant mortality (this article says we're 29th wrt infant mortality...no, we're 38th)
08 Nov 2004

During the 1990s Americans were getting healthier at an annual rate of 1.5% per year, since 2000 the increase dropped to 0.2% per year, now it has stalled completely. Experts say the main areas of concern are obesity and infant mortality.

The American Public Health Association says the drop in improvement levels is most concerning.

Obesity rates have gone up 97% since 1990. 23% of America's adult population has a Body Mass Index (BMI) of over 30 - in other words, they are obese. Obesity brings with it many health risks and problems - heart disease, diabetes, more aggressive cancers, depression, etc.

The obesity epidemic will bring with it many health problems in the future.

The lack of improvement in the infant mortality rate is a more immediate problem as it affects the nation's health now, not just for the future. According to the CDC, 75 babies die each day in the USA. This number is alarmingly high, say health experts.

With regard to infant mortality, the USA falls way behind other developed nations. Seven per thousand US infants never reach their first birthday. The USA is number 29 in the world infant mortality tables (number 1 being the country with the best results).
