Our profligacy leaves us vulnerable to foreign governments (including despots).

All they have to do is fail to show up at the Treasury auctions.

(If China or Japan or the Saudis failed to bid --- or, even more serious --- actually started reducing their holding of US debt, we would be in IMMEDIATE crisis.)
