We have a 900 cow dairy up the road. The town board was complaining to Lee that he had over 20 Mexicans working on this farm and there were unemployed young people in their township. Lee told the board and put an ad in the local paper that said he would hire every local person that wanted to work for 14 dollars per hour plus benefits the same as he was paying the Mexicans. He would gladly replace the Mexicans with local folks. He was unable to hire anyone just as he had been when he started the farm up. 14 bucks and benefits is pretty good money around these parts and he couldn't find a suitable person willing to work.

I really have an amazing amount of respect for Mexican workers. A real throwback to the success of our society just like the Irish or the Italians a century ago. The only difference is that the Irish and Italians tried to fit into US society by learning to speak the language. I think it is really unfortunate that public schools are now having to supply 2 teachers for each classroom - one speaking English and the other speaking Spanish. This is the case at the local high school in my district. Talk about a waste of potential for the Mexican students to integrate into the mainstream.
