Sharp Introduces Actius Desktop Replacement Notebook With 64-Bit Processing and Double Bright LCD Technology

HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 27, 2004--

Thin and light Actius AL27 Desktop Replacement Laptop Features Slim Design, Powerful Performance, and Enhanced Virus Protection

Sharp Systems of America today introduced a new notebook to their award-winning Actius notebook line. Following the tradition of the Actius slimmed-down and stylish designs, Sharp is introducing the Actius AL27, a slimmed-down desktop replacement notebook that provides an ideal balance of high performance and mobility in a sleek form factor that includes a new finish reminiscent of the dent and scratch-resistant finish of a fine sports car. The feature-rich Actius AL27 provides users with high performance 64-Bit processing via the Low-power mobile AMD Athlon(TM) 64 processor 2700+, enabled with Enhanced Virus Protection, along with a cadre of Sharp proprietary technologies including Sharp's DirectHD(TM), sharp-fx(TM), and Sharp's new Double Bright technology which brightens the notebook's LCD display two times brighter than the typical notebook display. Additionally, the Actius AL27 comes with Sharp's enhanced "smile" keyboard, which provides users with an ergonomically curved and tilted typing experience for maximum comfort.

"LCD displays are the user's portal to the notebook, and Sharp has been innovating in LCD display science for almost thirty years," said Terry Hanly, product marketing manager for Sharp Systems of America. "That tradition of innovation continues with the new Actius AL27 notebook computer. Sharp engineers have designed a powerful 64-bit notebook computer with an incredibly bright display that provides users with fantastic visual quality to meet the advanced performance that this machine offers. Along with many of Sharp's exclusive technology enhancements, the Actius AL27 notebook provides a tremendous value."

The Actius AL27 - State of the Art Computing

Based on the powerful AMD Athlon(TM) 64 processor 2700+, the Actius AL27 provides users with the ultimate in high performance notebook computing, providing leading-edge 64-bit performance. In addition to its tremendous computing power, the Athlon 64 processor is equipped with Enhanced Virus Protection, which takes advantage of advancements in the release of Microsoft(R) Windows(R) XP Service Pack 2 (SP2), and provides extra security at the platform level. This added level of protection gives users a first line of defense against certain malicious viruses, providing improved integrity of the users home or office network.

Sharp introduces Double Bright technology with the Actius AL27, giving the notebook's 15-inch XGA (1024 x 768) display twice the brightness of most industry notebooks, and equally bright (400 nits) to many of the upper end LCD displays available for desktop models. The Actius AL27 also features Sharp's Clear LCD finish, which provides users with highly saturated, rich colors and a color purity that isn't available with the matted finish traditionally available for notebook computers.

The Sharp Actius AL27 shines with a sleek, white finish that protects the notebook from abuse. The unique Ultra Violet (UV) finish hardens the coating to resist the scratching and staining that well-used notebooks take.

Shipping with Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition SP2, the Actius AL27 also comes stocked with 512 MB of standard SDRAM (expandable to 1,280 MB) and 64 MB of video memory (shared with system memory), making the computer ideal for visually intensive applications, including DVD playback, editing and high-end gaming. Taking advantage of its display power, the unit comes with a dual DVD optical drive that reads and writes using the most popular standards available (DVD+R, DVD-R, +RW, -RW & CD-R/RW).

To under score the Actius AL27's superior capability for video, the notebook also includes sharp-fx(TM), Sharp's exclusive DVD optimization software. This included module for InterVideo's WinDVD(R) player automatically adjusts image contrast for optimum clarity. Combined with the Actius AL27's high-quality 15-inch LCD screen, this image enhancing software enables superior DVD picture quality.

The Sharp Actius AL27 also takes advantage of Sharp's proprietary DirectHD technology, which allows the machine to be accessed as though it were another drive when connected via a high-speed USB cable to another computer. This allows the easy transfer of files between machines, making backing-up important data as easy as drag-and-drop.

Stocked with 60 GB(1) hard drive space, the Actius AL27 also includes an array of input/output ports including four USB 2.0 ports, IEEE1394, LAN, modem, mic in, headphone out, VGA out and a PCMCIA Type II card slot. The unit comes complete with 802.11b/g wireless connectivity. For ergonomic comfort, the Actius AL27 features Sharp's "smile" keyboard, which is tilted and curved to make typing more comfortable and natural.

Shipping in September, the Sharp Actius AL27 is competitively priced with an estimated street price of $1,499.
