Also remember that few hispanics are welfare immigrants (even if in some communities most welfare immigrants are hispanic).

I just returned from Tucson where "Mexican" can be a dirty word. Around here, that is not the case. There is a large, successful, well-regarded Mexican population. I plan to hire some Mexican painters who were highly recommended when I finally get around to painting my house. Nice work at a very reasonable price. All the workers around my condo are Mexican. Hard workers. A nice fellow who came to plug a squirrel hole into my attic last year was looking to buy in the development so I assumed that he had been working and saving. The Mexican community here is an asset to the best of my knowledge. I have zero problem with immigrants. I love the color and texture of my community. And particularly the taste.

My issue with illegals was never "welfare immigrants." I have no experience with them so they're under my radar. When I referred to "cheating," I wasn't talking about welfare cheats. My problem is with the message being sent regarding cheating/bypassing the system and breaking the law. The ability of a society to form and respect a queue and to get various tickets punched is a foundation of civilization. If we positively reinforce cutting in line, sneaking in the back door, and buying fake documents, we're headed for trouble. This is not a good grounding for future citizens. I'm not blaming the problem on the illegals so much as the system. We need to fix the immigration program so that the official version meets our needs and we need to enforce the rules no matter how much we may sympathize with the rule-breakers. Conflicting formal and informal systems screw up a lot of things.

We need to raise the speed limits, too. Ubiquitous speeding inures us to law breaking.
