Re: Bush's haphazard foreign policy is forcing the EU to militarize. Eventually, even the Polands will not have to kowtow.

But "militarize" for what purpose? Against which enemies? You Yanks are obsessed with the military, guns, missiles, global threats, imminent warfare and whatnot... You've got such a bunker mentality... Look at the map and at Europe's surroundings in particular --do you see any powerful, high-tech threat developing?

I have no idea.......it was an article that I read. It sounded as if the EU would not want to be as dependent on the US for military protection. It made sense to me. Bush has made Europe see that America may not always be dependable.

As for the American obsession with the military, its easier for Europeans to take that attitude with the USSR gone and with the US playing the major role in NATO.

South of Europe, there's but a bunch of impoverished, backward countries that rely on EU technology to develop themselves: Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria, Lybia, and Egypt... The ultimate goal of these countries is not to nuke Europe but to access its resources --its markets, be it the (EU) job market to take the slack out of their excess workforce or the (EU) consumer market as an outlet for their exports.

Agreed. I think you are right.

East of Europe, there's Turkey --another Muslim country that wants to join the EU, not to fight it, there's Israel whose Judeofascist leaders might one day ponder the idea of nuking some EU cities, and further to the East lies the wilderness of Central Asia... That's basically the current "security picture" of Europe.

You simplify somewhat........there is the Ukraine with its nukes. And Russia is still a question mark.

Of course, there are some genuine terrorist threats --those are to be dealt with by intelligence and police apparatuses, not aircraft carriers, gunships and cruise missiles...

I am the first to say that defense should not be 16% of our federal budget. And you're right.......the US is obsessed with staying strong.

So we should have sent some FBI or Interpol agents in to Afghanistan? Maybe some New York City Police detectives to question ben Laden about the events of 9/11/2001?
