Can't quite grok that you were actually serious about your proposal. Although 80% of healthcare dollars are spent on 30% of the population, 50% on only 5% of the population(as reported in NYT 10 days ago), the Bushies have asked the USSC to overturn Oregon's assisted suicide law. What if they win? And besides, who is prepared to decide when to withdraw care? You?

I actually agree with you that heroic efforts to briefly extend lives already full of pain and misery is inappropriate and inefficient.

It is just a very delicate area. A correct social policy can often seem cruel and callous to the families involved.

There is actually a lot of movement towards denying treatment in the last stages of life and that is coming from ever more restrictive payment policies by health-insurance providers.
