Re: And just for the record, Mexicans and Spainiards are two different people. The actors in the Mexican novellas may look European/Spanish; however, the majority of the population is either Meztiso..half Indian/half Spanish.....or full Indian.

Antonio Banderas
Actor
(1960- )

José Antonio Domínquez Banderas was born on the 8th October 1960 in Benalmádena (Málaga province [SPAIN]). After school, Antonio went on to study drama. Then, aged 19, he went to Madrid to seek his fortune with just 15.000 pesetas [~$115] in his pocket.

By luck, he met the acclaimed Spanish director Pedro Almodóvar and had his first film break, appearing in Laberinto de Pasiones alongside Imanol Arias.

Banderas soon became a regular in Almodóvar's films, including Requiem (1985), where he played a Spanish farmer, La Corte de Faraón and Caso Cerrado (1986) when he won the Fotogramas prize for the Best Actor. In 1985, he appeared in another Almodóvar film Matador, with was similarly successful.

In January 1991 the actor moved to Los Angeles to film the Kings of Mambo, directed by Arnold Lincher and based on the book by Pulitzer prize author Oscar Hijuelos. This was followed in 1992 by 'Philadelphia' where Banderas played the homosexual lover of Tom Hanks.

Re: We think of Mexicans like the Germans think of Turks.

Indeed... but tell me, why don't you think of Mexicans the way Germans think of Poles or, more generally, Eastern Europeans??

You're correct in pointing out Europe's racist hostility towards Turks, Arabs, Africans, etc. Yet the cultural gap --or chasm-- between these minorities and native Europeans is/was initially much wider than that between the US and Mexico... I mean, if it's that painful for the US South and Midwest to welcome Christian, Spanish-speaking Mexicans, just imagine what an ordeal it would be if Mexico were made up of Arab-speaking, Muslim folks!!

Re: Clearly, the US is dealing with a much more diverse population than Europeans.

Again, that's inaccurate... Racially or ethnically speaking, the US is indeed much more diverse than Europe, yet, as far as culture and ideology are concerned, it's a cultural monolith. Europe is made up of a dozen different languages, religions (not just judeo-christian sects), mores, lifestyles, etc.

And you're right about Belgium: the four million Walloons don't watch the same TV networks as the six million Flemings... They don't read the same newspapers, they don't elect the same politicians, they just share a common interest for... soccer. Out of our 45 TV channels, there're 8 French-speaking channels, 4 German-speaking ones, a Turkish one, a Moroccan one, a Greek one, 3 Dutch ones --not to be mistaken for the Belgian Flemish ones, BBC1, BBC2, Eurosport (in Dutch), etc.

Politically speaking, Europe is also much more diverse than the US: up until May 2002, the French government was made up of Socialist and Communist ministers... while Austria's coalition included far-rightist ministers (FPO-Jorg Haider); Belgium had Green ministers in her previous federal gov. France still has one Minister of Algerian extraction (Mr Mekachera, war veterans secretary). Although, as far as race and ethnicity are concerned, Europe is a white monolith.
