It's also possible that --- despite what we 'want' --- in the long run a Shiite dominated government, controlled by religious leaders (& quite likely closely associated with Iran's government) would actually accelerate a 'reformation' in Islam... and a transformation in the Middle East.

(Albeit: not by design.)

It's quite likely that Shiite domination of 'Iraq's' government would be fiercely opposed by the minority Sunnis --- with increasing levels of financial and military support from bordering Sunni dominated nations such as Syria and Saudi Arabia.

Either an 'open' civil war, or at least a simmering active resistance, could result in the partition of Iraq into Sunni/Shiite/Kurdish nations.

All the Sunni/Shiia conflict (which we would be wise to stay out of the middle of) could accelerate the necessary transformation of the regions corrupt and backward-looking regimes.
