If they can invent things for causes you like they can also invent things that oppose liberty or that you would dislike for other reasons.

I'm not suggesting "inventing things." I appreciate the problem with that just as you do. But there is some general language in there, like the tenth amendment, and some long-standing general understanding of what that refers to. It's clear that the framers intended that the federal government be kept off the backs of the people. I don't have any problem finding the right to be left alone in there and I don't have any problem with anyone with a different agenda making use of that right.
