The Democratic Party, during the primaries chose a messenger with a patriotic record. The messenger needed to have a message which is distinct from that of the incumbent.

Knowing what we know now if Kerry said that he like Bush would still vote the same way as him for the Iraq war, then why change horses. Actually that confused the voters and they decided to go with the status quo. Kerry in effect told the people that is the same idiot that Bush is.
