Data bank collects info on China's duststorms (Xinhua) Updated: 2004-11-12 00:49 China's first major sandstorm data bank based on Internet information has been established in Northwest China. The data bank was designed by the China Meteorological Administration's Lanzhou Institute of Arid Climate with a key laboratory in Gansu that specializes on the subject. . Sources from the Lanzhou institute said the bank comprises four different banks of data of general information, duststorm cases, disasters and references and documents. Experts said all information from China's 349 observation stations had been collected, some of which could be traced back to 130 years BC. The data bank was set up based on a special scientific research programme in northwest China and is supported by the Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology. Up to 50 domestic experts took three years to compile the information. A monitoring and alarm system officially went into operation recently in the drought-stricken area of Northwest China after a two-year trial operation. The system, part of the same research programme, is automatic and can forecast sandstorms and provide the information to local governments. Duststorms are mainly a feature of northern China, especially in the northwestern Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, Gansu Province, Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region and the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. In recent years, more than 10 have hit China every year, with heavy resulting losses to the economy.
