China prices still running fast

Thursday, November 11, 2004 Posted: 0259 GMT (1059 HKT)

Producer prices are still rising quickly in China.

BEIJING, Nov 11 (Reuters) - -- China's producer prices rose 8.4 percent in the year through October, the fastest rate in at least seven years, signalling inflationary pressures remain strong, data showed Thursday.

The October data compares with a rise of 7.9 percent in the year through September.

Producer price inflation has quickened all year, apparently little affected by the government's measures to cool the economy.

Last month the central government increased interest rates for the first time in nine years in a further attempt to engineer a soft landing for an economy that has been growing at 9 percent-plus this year.

It had earlier taken administrative measures, including restricting investment to certain sectors of the economy such as property and construction.

The producer price index, which measures the price of goods at the factory gate, has been rising at its fastest rate since before the 1997 Asian financial crisis.

China's producer prices in 2004 are as follows, showing the percent change on a year earlier: October 8.4, September 7.9, August 6.8, July 6.4, June 6.4, May 5.7, April 5.0, March 3.9, February 3.5, January 3.5.
