Yes, exactly. Rumsfeld has great ideas, like the modernization of our armed forces into more dynamic, highly mobile units, capable of projecting force within days to all corners of the globe. However, he has some very glaring flaws:
1) inability to admit mistakes,
2) too budget conscious at the expense of execution of war goals,
3) and fostering a culture of the means justifies the ends, which resulted in things like Abu Graib abuses.

If I was Bush, I'd have fired him a year ago. We need a new SecDef, and perhaps a new SecState.

As far as Ashcroft leaving, that took me by surprise. I'm somewhat indifferent to the whole debate about the curtailment of civil liberties due to the Patriot Act. Mostly my reaction is that this law impacts criminals and potential terrorists more than me. In fact, I'm not impacted at all. So I don't really care. On the other hand, curtailment of civil liberties during a time of war is an awfully slippery slope. So in principle, I'm glad we have watchdogs out there like the ACLU that take an extreme stand on everything. It keeps everyone as honest as possible.
