Of course when we believe our survival is threatened we all become survivalists. In attempting to justify our aggression against the Iraqis, however, you fail to acknowledge two critically important factors. First, the "we" whose continued survival is so ingrained in our genes is, for many people, the tribe itself as opposed to that individual. That's why we throw ourselves on grenades to save our fellow soldiers, that's why we stay back and cover the retreat of the rest of the "group," and that's why many Iraqis are instinctively picking up AK 47s and fighting against tanks, Blackhawk helicopters and 1,000 lb bombs. The second factor you fail to acknowledge is that the thinking part of our brains should be hard at work to assure that we are not placed in circumstance where "our survival is threatened." Part of that work is to assure that we do not create in other "tribes" the belief that they must kill us in order to keep their culture, their religion and their people vital. How do you think we're doing on that score with respect to the Iraqis? So go right on playing the survivalist mental game. Stockpile food, mark the Mormon's houses on maps, get that assault rifle oiled up and dress in camo outfits. It's a cowboys and indians exercise but the real game should be one of diplomacy, "do no harm," and the use of quick, deadly and overwhelming force when needed. The rest is just kid stuff. Ed
