Their stock is going to be "seriously deflated"? We look like the big bad bully.......they look almost innocent by comparison.

Everyone in Iraq knows they are not "almost innocent".

We will probably never win the "hearts and minds" of many of the terrorists or their closest supporters. What you can do is convince those who support you that you will win and they should keep supporting you, while you work on those in the middle. If you are passive and let the enemy have all the initiative then the people in the middle (and maybe even your supporters) will start thinking that they have to accommodate the terrorists and instead of the terrorists getting marginalized and isolated you will get marginalized and isolated. The people in the middle will often fall behind who they see as the likely winner. If you let the enemy have a base that you won't attack while yourself being subject to attack from that base and elsewhere you don't look like the eventual winner. Playing defense isn't going to win a war, you have to go on the offense at some point.
