Leonardo da Vinci, was such a fervent vegetarian that he would buy caged birds from poultry vendors and set them free.

"Truly man is the king of beasts, for his brutality exceeds theirs. We live by the death of others: We are burial places! Leonardo da Vinci

oh well, I guess no one is perfect

"In 1477, Leonardo left Verrocchio’s studio. The previous year Leonardo had been in trouble with the law, because an anonymous note dropped in the tamburo, a box outside the Palazzo Vecchio, accused Leonardo and three other young Florentine men of engaging in homosexual acts with a 17 year old artists’ model, Jacopo Saltarelli. While no witnesses came forward, the case went before a magistrate twice in two months. Leonardo, in desperation, successfully petitioned the head of the Florentine guilds, Bernardo di Cortigiano, at whose intervention Leonardo was acquitted on the condition that he was never again the subject of such an accusation."

It appears that was a rumour started by a jealous associate. You should perhaps check your sources prior to slandering others.
