The problem with morality as a basis for law is that the self appointed moralists inevitably claim that their particular set of morals were derived from some transcendental and infallible source. Of course each set of moralists has their own source, and none of them agree.

Law does not derive from any transcendental source. It can't because those who make laws need to be accountable, and transcendental sources aren't. We make laws, and when we do, we will be much better off if we abandon all ideas about enforcing anybody's version of morality and stick to defining and protecting the rights and liberties of individuals.
