"I see Greg's self-serving "faith" and fear of "Hell" as having no connection to the compassion of Nietzsche for the suffering of another creature."

I don't know how Nietzsche and Darwin got injected in this but I don't think either one of them said or espoused anything directly contrary to the existence of God. Although Greg may have imagined it rocked his narrow world view and the devil himself made up the fossil record.

"Did you not cry at the death of your first dog? I did."

I cried when I buried my last dog.

"We have a capacity to conceive of unicorns and devils and ents and SaltHeart FoamFollower, too."

Yes, and since we don't know why we have this capacity it is wrong to deny it in another. However, a good open handed slap upside down the head to people that figure they have it all figured out is always in order.

"Well...there is reasonable certainty that the biblical Jesus never existed."

I agree with that.

Jesus probably existed and was sort of a trouble maker due to having had to travel all the way to Egypt just to avoid being registered.

The Biblical accounts mostly show he cast out demons thru prayer and fasting, left a few otherwise worthwhile platitudes and was recognized by another called John the Baptist as the Son of God who then had his head cut off to appease the mother of Salome whose union JB did not approve of.

All in all it smacks of political intrigue with one side getting revenge on the other for monetary purposes.

And if the Jews are the chosen ones why did Moses drag them all over the Middle East for 40 years to the one place where there was no oil.
