Stockholm syndrome? Nah. I just think that most people are either too sensible or too busy or too scattered to get caught up in any malevolent plan. It's easy enough to get drawn into a shifting culture rather like the frog who sits in a pot until he cooks because the change is gradual. And then there's mob behavior, unsavory as it is. There's certainly risk. I'm just cautioning against mistaking the elephant's tail for the elephant and overreacting. You might like this article from today's Post. washingtonpost.com
