By the way, about thirty years ago, some folks in Western Canada, notably in British Columbia and Alberta, have toyed with the idea of seceding from Canada and joining the US.

Why?

Because they thought the Canadian Government was neglecting them and the Albertans thought that their government were unfairly forcing Alberta to hand over a sizeable portion of its gas and oil wealth. Indeed, at that time, the Canadian Government seemed to act as if Canada consisted only of Ontario and Quebec. Indeed, way back then, Western Canada looked rather drab and dull, undeveloped and uncared for. Of course, things have changed considerably since then.

Of course, the Canadian Government would not have allowed secession as that might encourage other provinces to follow suit resulting in the disintegration of Canada and then some......................................................
