Good photos at site. San Diego

Citizen Smash - "A Little Bit Nutty"WE GATHERED across from the Federal Building at 12:30 on Saturday afternoon. I recognized most of the usual faces from our previous counter-demonstrations. We also met a handful of new people – including several military veterans. One man wore a cap that identified him as a retired Navy Chief Petty Officer. Another elderly gentleman confided that he was a Navy veteran from WWII, Korea, and Vietnam; his wife of fifty years also joined us. I felt humbled and honored to have them as part of our group.

The other side began showing up about half an hour later. Their rally, to protest the "assault on Fallujah" (which was all but over by the time they got started), was scheduled to begin at 1:00, but they were running late. Theirs was the usual confusing mass of mixed messages: religious pacifists mingled with anarchists; communists selling newspapers for a dollar each; anti-capitalist vegans holding up a banner advertising a “yeast-free” bread shop; a woman -- made up to appear like a victim of multiple gunshot wounds -- lay prone on the sidewalk, draped in an American flag.

And then there were the Marines.

They arrived without warning, easily identifiable by their short hair and strong physical bearing. They eyed the protesters warily, but visibly brightened when they spotted our counter-demonstration. These Marines were on weekend liberty from infantry training at Camp Pendleton, and for many of them, this was their first trip into downtown San Diego.

After figuring out the lay of the land, one of the Marines pulled out his cell phone and called a few friends. Within minutes, we had almost twenty young Marines on site. They chatted with some of the older veterans; they mugged for photos, holding our signs; and, much to the dismay of our anti-war friends, they disrupted their rally by getting together and letting out a few hearty war cries: HOO-RAH!

Yeah, there’s nothing like a platoon of Marines to make the lefties glum.

As the leader of the Protest Warriors, I managed to get interviewed by the local NBC, WB, and FOX affiliates, as well as KOGO radio (my father called me the next day to congratulate me for doing a “good job” on the NBC interview – but only about ten seconds made it to the broadcast).

Despite a few heated discussions, the day ended peacefully. As we were leaving, I had the opportunity to talk briefly with one of the police officers providing security. “We sure appreciate you guys being so restrained,” he confided. “Personally, I think those peace guys are a little bit nutty, if you know what I mean.”

<<<Very interesting Howard Kurtz roundup of negative views of the Kerry campaign. Two comments:

1. Funny we're just hearing a lot of this now.
2. Why are we hearing this? Is it because it's easier to change candidates than to change the basic message? >>>

Not a word here about what Kerry would do as president.

Just personalities.

If personalities were the most important thing to getting elected Democrats should find a candidate that has one (a personality).

Have him read some Kennedy speeches to the audience.

Mrs Kerry is overwhelmed by the audience, she will wave once, and smile once, but will then retreat to her own world and own thinking which is more real than politics and cheering.

And a very proper thing for her to do, since she now has to go back to supporting Kerry in the manner to which he became accustomed.
