America did NOT attempt to take Russia down, for instance Like that was due to some humane feeling of self-restraint, a warm and benevolent gesture from the powerful giant with a good heart :-) America did not "attempt to take Russia down", only because they full well about the hundreds of nukes that would head in the specific direction of all US cities of any significance if any such "attempt" were to be unwisely initiated. It was a stand-off. Hence the references to the "bi-polar world" of that era.
