I have low-E double pane windows at la casa fredo. The vinyl replacement sort that Home Depot carries. I don't know if they use argon between the panes, but they certainly are a big improvement over the aluminum tracked originals I had.

In summer the house interior would heat to over 90 degrees, strictly from solar gain on the east and south windows. You could burn your hand if you touched the inside of the panes. With the low-E windows the house rarely heats up above 80. And of course I don't get the heat loss in winter that I did with the old windows, but 'winter' here is a joke compared to yours. I rarely fire up the furnace.

The only problem I have with the windows is that the installers (my friends and I) probably didn't get enough of that expandable foam insulation around the frames, and I think there are some minor air leaks. But you get what you pay for...

There is one small advantage the cheap, loose-fitting aluminum windows had over these vinyl jobs- I always knew when we were having an earthquake, even a small one, because they'd announce it by rattling.
