Nice answer, Johannes It will take me some time to formulate an intelligent (?) reply.

In the meantime, part of the problem may be with "race" itself. We use this term rather loosely. For example, I am a member of the human race (disputable by some, ggg). Then again I am a member of the Caucasian race. Additionally, I am a member of more confined sub-set race, American, or Anglo-Saxon, perhaps. Similarly, for a Japanese, it is human-Asian (Oriental)-Japanese. The lower set may be incorrect usage, yet is common (As an Englishman might say, "I'm proud of my race," meaning countrymen).

Attempting to convert "race" to the animal kingdom therefore becomes more complicated and confused. I'm afraid these usage problems also carry over to "racist" and "racism," as when the terms were applied to the Jets and the Sharks.
