The number being bandied about is $2Trillion in transition cost. Is it accurate? I don't know, and you don't know. But i've read it in the Wall Street Journal, and you can certainly find it in 100 articles on the Internet.

And that money ($2Trillion?) that isn't collected in FICA taxes from younger workers that opt in is never recovered. It's lost revenue (and subsequent deficit) that keeps accumulating until the older workers die. Outflow without inflow. Assuming you implimented the scheme for folks under 50, then the last of the people with full SS would be dying in another 45 years.

It's expensive as hell no matter how you slice it. I don't see anyway this country can afford it without a very, very significant tax increase. But then again I'm in the minority that thinks government should be fiscally responsible. All the Republicans here just want to spend more and more.
