Saving Freedom
By Arnold Kling

Suppose that 50 years ago the expectation for a 45-year-old man was that he would live to age 70, and that health care costs would be, in today's terms, $1000 per year after retirement, at age 65. Today, a 45-year-old man might expect to live to age 85, with health care costs averaging $10,000 per year. Assume that other post-retirement living expenses are $30,000 per year. The total post-retirement expenses are compared in the table below...

Total post-retirement expenses

$155,000

Today
$800,000

re: but it doesn't factor in the reduction in future liabilities

Or the reduction in future revenue. Or are they going to tax more and give less?

re: If I had the money and paid off my mortgage, it would cost me over $140k upfront but my net worth would not go down at all let alone over $140k.

Do you not get this? They will have to pay the benefits without the offsetting revenue. For a generation. The transition costs are huge, and we are already at a record deficit with the dollar diving. Don't you get it man, Bush and his Repulican congress is spending/tax cutting us into a huge hole. Wake up man, WE JUST CAN'T FREAKING AFFORD IT!!!

It's as if you want to contribute to your IRA with your credit card every year.
