I think that was largely misplaced hope as well. Unemployment remained at 14% to 20% up until the end of 1941. The debtload was huge and still 14% to 20% unemployment. What people like FDR never seem to understand is that it takes highly motivated (its their own money on the line) experts in a free market capitalistic economy to determine where investments from savings should be made, where the greatest returns on investment are. When Congress and a President intervene and try to do it themselves, its always going to be a collossal failure. Congress and the President are interesting in creating busy work, instead of comparing projects based on their expected returns on investment.

On the Communist side, I think there is enough evidence to implicate Roosevelt. Remember communism isn't a war against the rich, its a war against the bougeoise middle class.

J.C., one of my earliest memories is the day FDR died. I vaguely recall an aunt and the neighbor ladies sobbing in the street after the news came over the radio.

My aunt spent the next 30 years trying to convince me that FDR was a savior, replacing a guy that machine-gunned infants so he could serve them toasted on a stick to his evil friends.

FDR indeed instilled hope and confidence in the American people during excruciating times. That was a tremendous trait. Still, his economic policies were utterly wrong and stain our country to this day.
