Whether Mossadegh was a patriot trying to save a democracy or a power-hungry nationalist trying to destroy a democracy depends on who you talk to. What is clear is that the CIA and MI6 were instruments of two governments locked in a struggle with Mossadegh to control the oil wealth of Iran. What is also clear is that up until it was evident that provocateurs were inciting the mullahs against him and that there was a concerted effort to get rid of him, he was respectful of the Shah and of parliamentary procedure. When Mossadegh raised the royalty requirements on the oil, the Shah became our boy. And the resulting police state for 27 years sealed our fate there.

So, given our history in the region, which is essentially identical to our actions in other parts of the world for the entire 20th century, most notably in latin america, we will tolerate brutal regimes as long as they act in our interest. It ain't really about democracy in Iraq and pronouncements to the contrary ring hollow. Or do you think we suddenly got religion
