In my dotage I have discovered that the most important thing is to sleep well every night with a clear conscience, so I just live as simply and as honestly and as thoughtfully as I can. I am not even sure I used the word decamp properly. I can tell you it had nothing to do with camping. I had a life-changing camping experience when I was eight, which I won't go into very much but involved my horse rearing while crossing a narrow bridge during a lightning bolt, a baby brother with horrible non-stop diarrhea and a diaper shortage, etc. It was a very stormy day at Yosemite, and I have just never wanted to revisit any part of it. So I was using decamp as in the rich English family decamps to their summer cottage, where servants lay out starched linen tablecloths and old silver for the wild boar roast . . . you know, decamp as in move from one posh indoor space to another comfortable place that is a tiny bit more like camping. As an example, did you know that at Balmoral Castle in Scotland the women in the royal family wash their own dishes and play middle class housewife? Or so I've heard. In fact we are just renting a beach house which does not have tv, but has all the other normal things like beds and fireplaces and games. Our dogs love beaches, and so it is their vacation as well, OR no one decent, no hotel for sure, would ever accept a family with three dogs, so this or a mountain cabin are our only real choices, and since it is snowing in the mountains the beach sounded a bit more hospitable. I will let you know if I have any revelations after seeing the movie, though.
