re: forget the figures for NC, but the state spends a crazy amount of $$ on each kid's education. I think it was more than even private costs were (but I may be wrong on that one). It's certainly more than the costs of giving homeschoolers a deduction on the books and materials they buy.

The dollars per student are deceptive. That's taking into account the cost of the buildings, heating, cooling, maintaining the buildings, teachers salaries, on and on... All these are fixed costs. The incremental cost of one more student is next to nothing, since you would still have all the other costs.

re: So you don't think it's in the state's interest to educate everyone? Are you advocating getting rid of the public school system?

Wouldn't that be the Republican ideal? Why support educational welfare? Let the free market function and it'll be cheaper and better, right? And then the users can pay for it. It's sort of like taxing the rich at a higher rate to help take care of the poor. Isn't THAT in the "states interest"?

re: If you thought I was advocating that parents of home schoolers should completely avoid education taxes, then you misunderstand me (and I agree, that would be extreme).

I can't believe you want to raise my taxes to pay for home schoolers, when I don't have kids and I already pay for your kids (or someone like you) to go to school. And you haven't even said thanks.
