Operator to Offer Voice, SMS, and Internet Access to Subscribers in 16 Cities

# ALAMEDA, Calif., Nov. 15 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- UTStarcom, Inc. (Nasdaq: UTSI - News), a global leader in IP access networking and services, today announced the deployment of its MovingMedia 2000 all-IP Code Division Multiplex Access (CDMA) network solution with OneTel Communications Ltd. (OneTel) in Bangladesh.(Photo: NewsCom: newscom.com )

OneTel, promoted by the ABSCO and NITOL business conglomerates, is a greenfield operator licensed by the Bangladesh Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (BTRC) to provide fixed telecommunications services in the northwestern region of the country. OneTel is expected to offer CDMA with Wireless Local Loop (WLL) Fixed Wireless Terminal (FWT) services in early 2005.

"UTStarcom's industry-leading MovingMedia 2000 solution was a clear choice in view of its flexibility, scalability, and advanced feature set," said Asif Rabbani, managing director of OneTel. "The all-IP solution based on next-generation softswitch architecture also offers tremendous operational benefits over legacy TDM network gear, particularly for greenfield operators like OneTel."

OneTel was one of the first operators to be licensed by BTRC to provision services in the northwest region of Bangladesh following the commission's decision to open up fixed telecommunications services to competition earlier this year. In the initial phase of the network rollout, OneTel will offer CDMA voice, short-messaging service (SMS) and high-speed data access to subscribers across 16 cities in the region.

"With our end-to-end, all-IP CDMA network solution, operators enjoy a host of advantages including local switching, significant operational cost savings, and the ability to offer new, value-added services that cannot be enabled by TDM-based networks," said Anil Mehndiratta, director of sales and marketing for SAARC region for UTStarcom. "OneTel has ambitious plans for its telecommunications foray and is a key customer win for us in Bangladesh. With our strong regional presence and integrated product portfolio, we are well-positioned to address the emerging opportunities in the country."
