Mike,
We are on different wave lengths regarding what deterrence means. I dont want the horrors you describe to happen. I want to prevent it. Thats what deterrence did during the cold war. Of course the wild card here is stateless bin laden and what he perceives his interest to be. All arabs cant be martyrs even in his warped mind. (There are just not enough virgins to go around.<g>)
So how to deter a bin laden nuclear attack? I took a stab at it. Your turn. How do you DETER al quada from attacking? Does bin value Mecca for instance or is he willing to have it destroyed? I admit i dont really know the answer to that question, but maybe thats the key question to ask. For if he does value Mecca, Medina and other islamic holy places, a pledge to destroy it if he attacked would act as a deterrent. Hell, if NY were attacked by the soviets, it was clear that Moscow would go. No one talked about angry mobs of russians from brighton beach in brooklyn marching on US police stations if that occurred.
I am theorizing here, nothing more, nothing less. Now if bin laden didnt care if mecca was destroyed or if there was some holy islamic language in the Koran or words uttered by Mohammed that permitted its destruction in order to win a war with infidels, that would change everything. I await your on topic reply. Sorry for the snappyness before and lumping you in with my arch enemy Winn.(g) Mike
