Applied Materials Q1 Guidance Causes Concern

Standard and Poor's Equity Research maintained a "buy" rating on Applied Materials (nasdaq: AMAT - news - people ), saying the semiconductor company met fiscal fourth-quarter expectations despite a challenging operating environment. Applied Materials reported fourth-quarter earnings per share of 27 cents. "Net of a tax benefit related to foreign sales, and a litigation settlement, Applied Materials met our 25 cent estimate," S&P Equity Research said. Applied Materials said strong demand for 300mm technology was offset by legacy 200mm weakness during the quarter. S&P Equity Research said the company's fourth-quarter revenue that was below its forecast but was partly offset by cost cuts. Applied Materials offered sequentially lower first-quarter earnings-per-share guidance of 15 cents to 16 cents. "We are placing our fiscal 2005 estimate under review," S&P Equity Research said.
