The Sierra foothills are indeed very crowded. When I was a wee girl, there was not much between Sacramento and Lake Tahoe except beautiful hillsides and old ghost towns, and I used to love to drive around there and breathe in that California earthy smell that might be sagebrush but to me is the core of my memory of the land. If I owned a place in eastern Washington I would be very happy indeed, and on my way there. It is peaceful and there is room to stretch out still. If you observe your own behavior you get really quick clues when you do not treat others well, because you feel bad and unsettled. But it takes the luxury of leisure time and the willingness to look at yourself, and that can be really painful sometimes.
