And those of you who charge ashcroft has somehow created a police state should take pause here as well. Although there have been incidents of abuse, most moslems living in the US are largely unaffected by this war. Folks from many different places get along here for the most part and leave their conflicts behind them when they come. Just a few radical mosques and clerics and some questionable visitors is all the govt is after. Bush=Hitler charge can only be uttered by a moron. Mike

There is a very interesting article in this week's New Yorker concerning the veil issue in France.

The position of women Muslims living in the West is incredibly complex. I'm not sure any one of us can capture all the details. They range, on one extreme, from their subjugation by fundamentalist males to liberated, modern women who are visually indistinguishable from any others, at the other.

The veil in France is the first shot in the cultural war between French-style militant secularism and the legions of rapidly growing disaffected Muslims in the teeming French cites.

French are weird. They'll simply not fight for things we consider worthwhile, but they'll rip each other up about maintaining their secular society.
