The NYT explains that the reason there are no conservatives in Academia is that they are too selfish and stupid to go into the Liberal Arts and Social Sciences

Even in academia for the hard sciences, I think there are still more liberal profs than conservative ones, though the ratio should be much closer in the computer and engineering fields than the social sciences.

If you're a PhD and you're good in your field, you're much less likely to stick around and wait for a tenure that eventually pays less than half of what the private sector typically gives you. (Unless your parents are rich, or perhaps if you have an aversion to accumulating wealth).

Further if you're a real entrepreneur, you're more likely to start doing things earlier and be also less likely to stick around doing your doctorate.

Speaking generally, entrepreneurial spirits by and large will be more likely to be more conservative in their outlook on taxation and economic issues.
