Third parties Karen. Be fair. Clinton vs Bush41 and Clinton vs Dole would have been larger majorities than Bush-kerry in a two man race or a three way with sorry Ralphie included. Mike

Apples to apples: In his second term (and despite all the witch hunts) the competition was pretty one-sided: 31 states (plus D.C.) and 379 electoral votes for Democrat Bill Clinton; 19 states and 159 electoral votes for Republican Bob Dole.

It was a lot more than 43% you quote. More importantly, the difference between Bush's and Kerry's support is narrow, which undermines any claim to "mandate" no matter what percentage of the population voted. Clinton on the other hand won with better than 2:1 margin.

Bush received 2.9% more of the vote than Kerry (if you believe the election results)- that's hardly a mandate in any land but the land of the wishful thinkers.
