It is true although I think plenty of "brand name" staff are made in China too. The only difference is the title. And that is to fulfill the "conspicuous consumption" of the middle class people in developed countries<g> Take Ralph Lauren shirts for example, I saw a lot of blue color workers, as well as CEOs, wear them<g> So are those brand names still carry the same fame like they were a couple of decades ago?

The people in the developed world are also plenty happy with the inexpensive wares.

Based on read of nature of commercial discussions and talks of private equity crowd, the newest strategic initiatives by int'l, both global and regional (those w/ China-based R&D and/or manufacturing) and domestic Chinese (private and state-owned) firms comprise what I call "China, inside out" (as opposed to "China, outside in" of the previous phase) strategy:

(a) Int'l companies actively helping the domestic companies to go global in exchange for goodies

(b) Domestic and regional companies aiming to explicitly capture and purposefully dominate the bottom 2/3 of the global consumer pyramid where the globals are not watching and do not have the flexibility to hold on to

(c) Same general gist going on in the resource sector

This approach appears to be an extension of Mao's guerrilla war strategy, capturing the countryside to surround the cities.

The financial sophistication of the domestic players have lept in large steps since 1980-2000, the ambition of the regionals have increased enormously, the willingness of the globals are also much higher than before and ever.

Exciting times, straight ahead.

I suspect the coming wave of globalization will be much more creatively destructive than all earlier waves combined, and then raised to the power of 4, approximately, give or take, but close enough for the guy getting hit.
