i think that's a generational thing. i'll bet the average age of faculty is in the late forties, early fifties now-- mid baby boom generation, who grew up during the sixties and VN war. we're a liberal generation (present company excepted!). i have a number of friends in academia (a few who are decidedly conservative, but most are liberal) who say this generation of undergraduates is more conservative than they. i think the politics of the academy will be reversed in 15 years. then the conservative professors will have to apologize for all bush's horrific actions to a new generation of liberal undergrads. ;-)
