My plan right now is to retire in 5 years. B4 then, I want to set up an energy system; solar and hopefully, small scale hydro on a seasonal creek. I'm not sure about plugging wind into the mix, 'cuz the windy part is up top, and I live down near the bottom.
Instead of batteries for storage, you plug into the grid. If the meter runs backwards, you earn money. I could get a nice little "dividend" check every month.
I've thought about it for quite a while. Ca. even had grants to pay maybe a third the cost. I don't know if we still do. I've shied away from doing it, because I don't want the building inspector to look at his plans, and my house, and send the tax man out. Property taxes drop when you hit 65, I believe. I'll just wait, and feel guilty a bit longer.
