I had seen that there were experiments involving taxing by the mile. For every tactic there is a counter tactic. What is to stop someone from bleeding a few gallons from their hybrid every week and using it for road trips in the pre-mile tax jalopie?

We should factor in weight of the car in addition to mileage. Maybe terrain that you travel should be weighed, dessert highways would be less expensive to maintain than mountainous roads. Of course the type of tire, and its current coefficient of friction would want to be used. Am I totally ridiculous yet?

Toll roads tax you by the mile. We could just turn every road into a toll road.

Tim, the reasoning behind the stupid mileage tax is this: Cars get taxed by the gas gallon, but the money is spent on maintenance which is supposedly proportional to the miles the car travels on the road. If the car gets more efficient at consuming gas, that means it's paying less of a share of the road maintenance costs, even though they're not wearing out the roads any less.

The logic is full of holes, but hey, leave it to a politician to come up with creative new tax schemes.

Tim, I just changed my mind on the mileage tax. I think it's an EXCELLENT idea. In fact, I think the concept can be expanded to include satellite tracking of speeders. Revenues from fines will be pouring in, and the streets will be a lot safer since no one would dare speed. That means lower auto insurance costs, less crowded trauma units, etc.

Not only that, but we'll be able to track registered sex offenders and keep tabs on where they go every minute of every day. If, for example, a convicted pedophile violates a restraining order and goes within 10 yards of an elementary school, cops will show up and haul his ass away in minutes.

Cars with expired registrations or other issues (for example, failed emissions test) can also be tracked, thus leading to few uninsured drivers on the road and less air pollution.

And I can go on and on. The possibilities are limitless!
