Yes, extremely doubtful that they would outright invade, since they would have even less chance of successfully occupying Iran than Iraq, and definitely don't have the troops for it. At the same time, some people in the Pentagon and Israel would be happy just to see Iran become engaged in civil war and self-destruct into smouldering ruins. None of their friends have business interests to speak of there anyway -- mostly just the Europeans and Chinese. Yes, much more likely that they would do some tactical bombing using Israel as the proxy while at the same time trying to destabilize the government. If Iran retaliates against Israel, they jump in with bombing to destroy the country's infrastructure and provide weapons support to an opposition faction to try to take over or at least seriously destabilize the government, with the excuse (good enough for Fox News) that they are only trying to protect their poor defenseless friends, the Israelis, from aggression, or to combat evil terrorists. The only question as to whether all this will happen is whether they have calculated they can do this without having Iran inflict any serious damage on them or Israel. Of course, they would have to allow oil to keep pumping out of Iran for the most part to keep prices from going to the moon, which would be another challenge. They would more seriously swell the ranks of terrorist, but the whole gang in favour of war love that, since the more terrorism, the more the US public needs Bush and company to be there to "protect" them from terrorists and further turn the US into a fascist, police state where Bush does whatever he wants. Needless to say, what happens to Iran and the Iranian people they could care less.
