"It seems futile to discuss the reality of Iraq with you.
Let's save ourselves the time and words."

I would agree with you that when two opinions are ridiculously far apart and there is absolutely no common ground, it is probably futile to discuss the issue of Iraq.

I do take objection to your implication that it is you who understands the REALITY of Iraq, however, and that I do not.

This is very easy to resolve--we will just wait and watch the news over the next few months, and see what actually happens there.

To clarify, are you predicting a win for U.S. troops in Iraq, with the country pacified, elections run as promised, and a democratic government? Or what would you consider a win?

I am predicting that we will either pull out soon and abruptly, declare a win even though there really isn't one, and Iraq will disintegrate into civil war, OR we will get hideously bogged down there, reinstitute the draft, and, um, what did they say in Vietnam? Oh, yes, we will destroy the village in order to save it, OR there will be some other end to the mess that is disastrous to the U.S., like a terrorist attack here so huge that we have to pull out and bring our troops back to protect the homeland.

Well, we'll just see what happens . . . I hope that I am wrong.
